One of the most interesting aspects of comedians (IMHO) is the fact that there is always that “other” side to their personalities. It’s that side that keeps most of us guessing and wondering about what they are really like.
All comedians have it; it just depends on when, or if, they want to reveal it to the public. Dave Chapelle certainly showed us that “other” side a couple of years ago, when he left a very lucrative contract with Comedy Central and took refuge in Africa to figure himself out. Other comedians have also had strange turns of events in their lives, which suggest that they aren’t all funny, all the time.
This is very apparent for comedic legend Steve Martin. Martin is in the throes of releasing an album – no, it’s not stand-up — and preparing to embark on a tour in support of it.
The album is titled The Crow: New Songs for the Five-String Banjo; and yes, it is a bluegrass record and yes, he is serious. Apparently, Martin is a pretty handy banjo player and fell in love with the instrument years ago – 45 years to be exact.
In fact, he was quoted as saying: “The banjo generated nostalgia for experiences I never had, joy I was yet to experience and melancholy that was yet to come.”Much of the music on the album is simply re-recorded tunes that are being re-released from his early 80s comedy record, The Steve Martin Brothers.
The interesting thing about the CD is that for Martin, there is a point to releasing it. It details his long, checkered history with this instrument that he just couldn’t seem to master when he first began playing it.
He cites it as being “the most undemanding thing in my life” and something that is “always there for you.” He even reflects his love for the banjo in the liner notes of the CD.
All of which is warm, honest, heartfelt and decidedly unfunny; this is because Martin is showing us a more vulnerable side of himself than we are used to seeing in some of his more slapstick moments.
This is not to say that this won’t be quite a switch; after all, we are used to seeing him do stand-up routines, it will be quite different and fascinating, in a good way, to just see Martin and his banjo on stage, rocking out.
The tour is a fairly short one, with a Steve Martin Boston date as well as a Steve Martin Atlanta show. Steve Martin Chicago fans will delight in his stop through as will Washington D.C. Steve Martin fans.
He will also hit southern cities, with a Steve Martin concert tour Dallas date as well as a Nashville Steve Martin show. Denver Steve Martin fans will be treated to a show on the tour as will Steve Martin Philadelphia fans.
The interesting thing is that fans – new and old — will probably really connect to Martin as a person because of his music; as music is usually the best vehicle for doing so. His tour is not going to be a barrel of laughs and fans who are going to actually connect with Martin through his music will probably appreciate that.

Who Started Youtube Shreds? Is It Just One Guy Who Does Them All?
Somebody once wrote me through my youtube account and asked me: What’s with the finnish guy (STSanders) on Jimmy Kimmel claiming he does these shreds videos? Apparently this person assumed that it was just one guy who does all of the shred videos on youtube? I guess it’s hard for some people to understand that it is possible for more than one person to do something like this!
Here was my answer: Well the finnish guy (STSanders) coined the phrase “shreds” and he was the first (on youtube) to do these types of videos. His videos like “santana shreds” really took off, some of which actually grabbing the attention of the actual artists! Unfortunately some of these artists lacked a sense of humor, and complained about the videos to youtube. This eventually lead to the deletion of StSanders original account.
I came along in 2007 and did my first shred (Creed shreds / Funny sounding vocals), and didn’t really expect any views. Boy was I surprised! So yes, StSanders was the first on youtube to do these types of videos, and now there are many who are learning how to do it, and making good videos as a result. So it’s not just “one guy” doing these shred videos as many people think. There are a lot of different users now in on the game, and the phenomenon doesn’t seem to be dying anytime soon! In fact there should be an article about shreds featured in the May 2009 issue of Spin Magazine!
Beyond the label of shreds, Stsanders wasn’t the first to do these types of videos. I just saw a spoof of Phil Collins which was edited together back in 1988! Of course it wasn’t called a “shred” but the same idea was implied. I believe there was another camp doing shred videos before StSanders called “Legion of Rock
Stars”. Once again you basically have the same thing as shreds without it being called ?shreds?!
So if you haven’t seen any shreds videos, then go to youtube, and search for Creed Shreds 3!

Peter Singer propounds a version of consequentialism known as partiality utilitarianism, according to which individuals should perform those actions that maximize their preferences what they would prefer to be the case without regard to the nature of those preferences themselves. On this approach, it is good – intrinsically valuable – for persons to have their preferences satisfied, no matter what those preferences may actually be. A more serious and, it turns out, related, problem arises for the utilitarian when one faces the fact that the theory requires individuals to bring about the best consequences – that is, the maximum balance of pleasure over pain or happiness over unhappiness.
The problem is that sometimes the best-aggregatedconsequences for everyone concerned are not essentially the best for each individual. Utilitarianism is inherently an aggregative theory; different individuals’ pleasures and pains are aggregated. Taken in a purely quantitative sense, the theory might seem to permit us, indeed to require us, say, to kill or torture an individual if this would promote the utmost benefit of others: the majority.
World poverty and hunger are severe problems and require serious, but also feasible, solutions. Perceptibly, in addition to encouraging efforts among the poor that could help therapy or mitigate their poverty for example, birth control information and devices so that poor families don’t have more children than they can afford to raise, and job training that prepares people to earn decent wages, we should motivate people who have more than enough to give away more of their excess income but not all of it to charities that aid the poor.

While it was odd, playing with cars moving past. Sound check was a bit of a bear, with the sounds coming from the streets and the very tight spaces in which the performers had. The sound was good and the people seemed to enjoy themselves, though most of them were in the process of going somewhere. Still we made a nice day of it.
